Surgery for Cats

Surgical Procedures
Our doctors utilize state-of-the-art surgical techniques and pain management protocols to provide your cat the safest and most comfortable experience. Especially Cats Veterinary Hospital offers a full range of soft tissue surgeries from routine cat spays and neuters to more advanced procedures such as bladder surgeries (cystotomies), abdominal surgeries for foreign bodies, growth removal, and diagnostic surgeries to determine causes of weight loss, vomiting and diarrhea.
Before Surgery
Prior to surgery, our doctors will perform a comprehensive physical examination to review your cat’s health status. Blood tests may also be performed prior to surgical procedures, in order to assess liver and kidney function, blood counts, and clotting function. After examination and any pertinent laboratory tests, your cat will be given a combination of injectable sedatives and pain reliever to help reduce the amount of anesthetic gas required and prevent pain. Local anesthetic injections may also be used to reduce pain perception.
During Surgery
After your cat has been sedated, an IV catheter may be used to deliver additional anesthetics and IV fluids, and intubated by passing a tube into the airway through which oxygen and anesthetic gases are delivered. We also use anesthetic monitoring equipment to help monitor vital signs, oxygenation, and other important parameters during surgery. In the operating room, doctors and staff maintain high-level sterility to ensure low risk of infection
After Surgery (Post-Operative)
After the surgery is complete, our technicians attend one-on-one to your cat during the recovery period, to ensure that he or she is warm, comfortable, and hydrated. When your cat is ready to leave the hospital, our team will meet with you to review aftercare instructions including any medications that should be administered at home, as well as feeding guidelines post-operatively, and any activity restrictions. A post-operative follow-up appointment will be scheduled to assess healing of surgery sites, typically two weeks following the procedure
